Pool Opening Guide: How to Open Your Pool for Swim Season

As the days grow longer and the last traces of winter snow fade away, it’s time to start thinking about another swimming season!

If your pool was closed for the winter, now’s the time to get it back up and running for swim season.

To help you feel confident about the when, how, and why of pool opening, we turned to our experts for answers to some of the most common questions. Here’s what they shared:

What does "pool opening" mean and when should I do it?

Opening your pool simply means undoing the steps taken to close or winterize it and getting everything cleaned, checked, and ready for another season of swimming. The best time to open your pool depends on where you live, but a good rule of thumb is when daytime temperatures are consistently averaging 65°F or warmer.

Even if your pool is indoors or stays open year-round, spring is an ideal time to take a closer look at its condition. A seasonal check-in helps ensure your pool is properly maintained and fully equipped for another year of smooth, uninterrupted swimming.

Liner - New year, new you! If your pool is ready for a fresh look, spring is the perfect time to consider a new liner. A liner refresh can instantly revive your pool’s appearance and help set the tone for a great swimming season ahead.

Cover Fabric - Complete your pool refresh with a new cover fabric. A new fabric not only enhances the look of your pool but also helps protect and preserve it throughout the season.

Swim Current and Treadmill Maintenance - Avoid unexpected downtime by tackling preventative maintenance before your swim season begins. Since some replacements require draining the pool, components like underwater hydraulic motors are often updated at the same time as a liner replacement to make the most of the process. Explore our preventative maintenance categories below to keep everything running smoothly all season long:

What supplies will I need to open my pool?

Basic hand tools

Items like adjustable wrenches and screwdrivers are essential when opening your pool. Tasks such as removing covers, opening pool skirting, and reconnecting plumbing lines often require a variety of common hand tools.

Skimmer net, brush, and/or underwater vacuum

Even a well-closed pool can collect debris over the winter months. Skimmer nets, brushes, and underwater vacuums make it easy to clean things up and get your pool looking its best for spring.

New filters and start-up chemicals

Kick off the season prepared by assessing your pool’s needs and stocking up on essentials. Fresh filters and start-up chemicals help ensure clean, balanced water from day one. Explore our top categories for seasonal replenishment:

What Steps Do I Need to Take to Open My Pool?

1. Remove the Winter Cover

Start by removing any cover or materials used to protect  your pool over the winter. Clear away leaves and debris, then give the interior  a good brushing. A skimmer net or underwater vacuum can make this cleanup process quicker and easier.

2. Reconnect Plumbing Lines and Equipment

As part of winterization, the water was drained from the plumbing lines and equipment and components are often disconnected or plugged. To open the pool, simply remove those plugs in the thru-wall fittings and reconnect all plumbing lines and equipment to restore normal operation.

3. Assess Winter Damage

Winters can be cold and unforgiving, and despite careful preparation, outdoor conditions can still take a toll on pool components. If you notice anything damaged or broken during your spring opening, please contact us at 800‑910‑2714 or email poolhelp@endlesspools.com. We also recommend taking a photo of the item in question so we can quickly and accurately help you find the correct replacement.

 4. Top Off the Pool and Start it Up

If needed, add water to reach the proper fill level. Then, turn the circuit breaker back on and confirm that all systems are operating correctly, including the pump(s), heater, and any hydraulic features such as the swim current or treadmill. If something doesn’t seem to be working as expected, the troubleshooting resources below can  help.

5. Test the Water and Shock the Pool

Use test strips or a test kit to check all of your water chemistry levels. Adjust as needed, then give your pool a strong dose of chlorine (shock). Think of this step as a healthy spring cleaning for your water, plumbing lines, and the entire pool system.

Don’t forget to record your water chemistry results! Start the season off right by printing a new Water Chemistry Test Log to track your readings throughout the season.
